Big things are taking place in the gaming and blockchain world. Google Cloud and Solana Labs have decided to collaborate again by launching an exciting new tool called Gameshift. This new development application programming interface (API) is a game-changer, helping developers bridge the gap between traditional games and Web3, which includes cool features such as blockchain technology and digital assets.
So, what is this Gameshift that everyone is raving about? In simple terms, it is a set of tools designed to help game developers add Web3 components — think non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other digital goodies — into their games quickly and easily. It is meant to help game studios step into Web3 easily without the need to be experts in the complicated tech behind it.
The launch was officially announced at the 2024 Solana Breakpoint conference during its Gamer Village event, the perfect place to talk about the future of gaming. Even better, Gameshift is already available on the Google Cloud Marketplace, so developers can dive right in.
Gameshift is designed to bridge the world of traditional gaming, also known as Web2, with the new world of Web3. According to a post by Google Cloud, this API provides everything a project needs to integrate Web3 services into games. Basically, there is no need for developers to worry about the complexity of blockchain security or building from scratch. Gameshift does all the heavy lifting.
Jack Buser, director for games at Google Cloud, explained it best when he said, “Game studios have been looking into Web3 for new growth and development ideas, but the tech can be confusing. Studios are already juggling a lot, and Gameshift offers a way to simplify both the technology and the cultural shift into Web3.” To put it in another way, Gameshift allows game developers to explore all aspects of blockchain and digital assets without becoming overwhelmed by the technical side.
This collaboration between Google Cloud and Solana Labs is not the first in the quest to push the boundaries of Web3. In fact, it’s become a bit of a tradition for the two companies to announce exciting collaborations at the Solana Breakpoint event. In 2022, they revealed that Google Cloud was becoming a node validator for the Solana blockchain, which is basically a way to help support the blockchain’s network.
At the same event, Solana also introduced a Web3 store and a blockchain-powered smartphone. Fast forward to 2024, and history is repeating itself: this year’s Breakpoint event showcased not only Gameshift but also the newest version of Solana’s blockchain-enabled smartphone.
As more companies collaborate in the way Google is working with Solana, the world could see more Web3 innovations that address the needs of various companies, such as Horizon Fintex, in serving their customers.
