Upcoming Apple Update Could Hamper Web3, Crypto Apps in the EU

The tech community is buzzing with concern and speculation about the possible impact of the next iOS update by Apple on the Web3 app and crypto ecosystem in the European Union. The center of this issue lies in Apple’s decision to remove progressive web apps on its devices.

This initiative could significantly change the sector for users and developers alike. At first sight, the move appears to be a step forward in complying with the Digital Markets Act under the European Union. This act is focused on encouraging a more competitive digital market. It may have unforeseen consequences, however, especially for crypto and Web3 applications.

The disabling of progressive web application support from iOS devices means that developers now have to shift to native app development. Pivoting towards native apps isn’t easy, especially since these apps need more resources, both in terms of money and time. Additionally, they’re subject to the strict guidelines and review process employed by Apple.

In a statement, Apple highlighted that the company did regret the effect that the change, which was made to comply with the Digital Markets Act, would have, particularly on its users and developers of home screen web applications.

Traditionally, developers of Web3 and crypto apps have relied on the cross-platform accessibility and flexibility of progressive web apps. With this change, however, we may see an increase in the time needed for applications to reach the market as well as increases in development costs.

Additionally, the ban on progressive web apps could limit the reach of Web3 and crypto applications. This is mainly because these applications have the ability to function across different platforms without needing to be installed from an app store. This makes them an important tool for ensuring broad accessibility.

Additionally, the ban on progressive web apps may also stifle innovation. Through the restriction of these applications, Apple may unintentionally decrease the adoption rate of already existing as well as new Web3 technologies among iOS users.

This decision has been criticized by many, including NoOnes CEO Ray Yousef, who views the move as an attack against a free market for Bitcoin and information. Yousef is calling for the tech community to think about the broader implications of this policy change, noting that the time has come to boycott Apple. His appeal highlights the increasing concerns within the crypto field regarding the future of application development and distribution on major platforms.

The Web3 app and crypto ecosystem is at a critical point, especially with the release date of iOS 17.4 inching closer. Given the track record of Web3 finding ways to march ahead despite the challenges in the existing regulatory landscape, it is possible that entities such as Horizon Fintex will still find a way to maintain their growth trajectory should the Apple update adversely affect any future plans they may have had.
